“I Have These Tapes From Your Dad”

This blog was created as a result of the work we are doing on The Timeless Gospel Podcast. Who is “we”? I’m glad you asked.

“We” are two sisters, who grew up with amazing parents who understood God’s sovereignty, and grace in the Christian life. I’m Faithann, and my sister is Joy, and as we say on our podcast, “we have good news.”

The story of how this blog began is really the story of how the podcast of the same name began. Indulge me while spin a true yarn for you, a yarn of the amazing providence of our dear Savior.

Our dad, Larry, was an exhorter, a true teacher, whose ministry was to show Christians the joy and rest they find in their Christian life. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our dear mother, Linda, the rock Larry leaned on to help him with his ministry. While Linda’s grace didn’t come from the pulpit, it came from her kindness, her deep knowledge of the scriptures, and, like Larry, her desire to share the good news of the gospel with others from behind the scenes.

In the late 80s, Larry preached through the book of Romans, verse by verse. He recorded every sermon on tape. Next, Linda clearly labeled each tape, including verses covered and the date the sermon was preached. Finally, that week’s gospel message, protected by 4 inches of plastic, was mailed to Linda’s sister, our dear aunt Shirley, who lived several states away.

Remarkably, Shirley kept every single tape. Every. Single. Tape.

When Larry went home to be with the Lord, our dear Aunt Shirley traveled to be with us for his funeral, and brought the tapes. “I have these tapes from your dad,” she said softly as the box lovingly transferred from her hands to mine.

As life seems to normally go for most of us, I didn’t appreciate the treasure she handed over that day. I certainly do now.

A few months after the funeral, my husband tried to upload the tapes to youtube, with terrible results. The tapes were, as you can imagine, hard to listen to. Church members who new Larry told Joy and I that not only was Larry hard to hear due to all of the background noise, but the muffled voice sounded nothing like the sweet Larry they learned from, and loved.

Nothing happened until June of 2024, when my husband decided to put a file of a sermon tape in an editing program called Davinci Resolve. He was familiar with Davinci due to his work in our family business. He wondered, if he put the audio file of a one of Larry’s sermons into the program, and turned on a small feature in the program called “voice isolation,” would the quality of the audio improve?

He told me his idea, and I of course thought it was a good one, but still I had no understanding of just how good an idea it was.

The day came when the theory was tested, the “voice isolation” toggle was switched from “off” to “on.”

The text he sent said, “You need to come in here and listen to this.” I raced to his office, and heard about ten seconds of Larry’s sermon without voice isolation, then ten seconds with voice isolation.

“I’m starting a podcast. These sermons are going on a podcast!” I said as soon as I heard the difference. Listening to Larry with voice isolation was like listening to Larry right there in the room with us.

That night Dave and I picked a sermon to listen to together, Romans 8:28, God works ALL THINGS together for our good.

From the moment I decided to start The Timeless Gospel podcast, the Lord has been working remarkably to touch the lives of many, including mine. Thirty-three episodes in, Joy agreed to come onto the podcast as a permanent co-host. I asked Joy what made her say “yes” to my invitation, watch her heart warming answer here.

The blog now, will be the way Joy and I can make even more of an impact, by extending the reach of Larry and Linda’s ministry of joy and rest for Christians.
