“A dog cannot bark without it being for my good….Romans 8:28 is for the believers…I don’t care if it’s a man, an animal, a created object, an angel in Heaven or a demon out of Hell, none of them can touch you. Nothing can happen to you, you are indestructible…That’s as good as it gets as far as I’m concerned.” -Larry Horton
Now that the idea of a podcast with my dad’s sermons was a real thing, it was time to record the first episode. I had asked my sister Joy if she wanted to be on the very first episode with me. She agreed, and walked into my kitchen the first Thursday morning of October, to get this thing done.
She told me about 5 minutes before we sat down to record, “I’m going to talk about Kimera.” A simple “OK” was my answer, and we turned our microphones on. Kimera was Larry’s oldest daughter from a previous marriage, who died of cancer when she was 26 years old.
While the sermon stops abruptly and our discussion begins with no real transition, (we didn’t know what we didn’t know), we found ourselves easily highlighting the sermon’s themes. What fun we had talking about our dad, and Joy so insightfully explained what was at the heart of Larry’s ministry, good news for the Christian.
She mentioned Kimera, and what Larry told her years after Kimera’s death, which reminded me of a sermon Larry preached at Eastern Avenue Church, forgotten for decades. The theme of Joy and Larry’s casual conversation, probably over cups of coffee on a back porch, and the theme of Larry’s sermon at Eastern was the same:
The Word of God is true, whether we feel like the Lord is close or not.
About 2 months after our first recording, I found the tape of that sermon from Eastern Avenue, and played it on Episode 20, the last episode of Season 1.
Joy was the perfect first guest, for the very first episode of a podcast that is changing lives even now, 43 episodes in.
Listen to episode 1 here.
Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.
